Conservation is about ensuring that the most culturally and historically significant artefacts from around the world remain intact and on display for future generations to enjoy and understand. It is both a science and an art that involves meticulous investigation and analysis in order to understand cultural material as fully as possible and make judgements on how best to treat it.
At Camberwell rigorous historical and museological understanding, craft skills, technical and scientific knowledge are developed in a stimulating, friendly and strongly supportive environment. Conservation at Camberwell has an international reputation and graduates work in some of the most important museums and institutions in the world.
The courses here provided exceptional teaching in conservation practice, science, history and museology, with students winning major awards including Erica Kotze won the Pilgrim Trust Student Conservator of the Year Award, for her MA Conservation project completed at Camberwell in 04 – The Conservation of a Thai Samut Khao Bhuddist Medical Manuscript.
Graduates from Camberwell have worked with collections at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Victoria and Albert Museum, Library of Congress in America, the British Library, St Paul’s Cathedral and Windsor Castle.
