Joshua Le Gresley
I am exploring the relationship between the viewer and the screen in the gallery environment. The focus of my current work considers the tension between the mimetic aspect of painting and how it relates to the re-productive, mechanical process of photography. I am fusing the conflicting roles of infinitely reproducible photography and the unique quality of painting, to produce paintings in a machine-like manner.
Portraying the viewing ‘experience’ of the video installation is my primary concern. By reducing film and video art into its elementary components, an air of banality and neutrality pervades. I intend for there to be a sense of utopian optimism; a naïve view of video installation. The result is work, depicting objects as signs rather than using illusionary realism.
