Charlie Field
‘Liminal space’ is described as a place on a threshold, the spaces in between places; subways, bridges, roundabouts, stairways, alleyways, doors, windows, and more. This has been my focus from the start but I was unable to pinpoint it, research allowed me to understand the link between the spaces I was photographing and the processes involved. The use of a large format camera seemed the most appropriate way of photographing , the spaces could be thouroghly explored from the one vantage point, allowing me to build a mental picture of the images I was producing. Through a process of turning the camera on itself between two merged exposures a series of overloaded, uncertain photographs have been produced. The camera is placed into liminality, it becomes liminal, in between the two viewpoints, the two spaces that we experience in reality. The viewer is presented with an altered state, an altered reality, a viewpoint that cannot be experienced or seen with the naked eye.
