Joel Stephens
Joel Stephens is a 3rd year BA Hons Graphic Design student studying at Camberwell College of Art, London.
Joel believes that Graphic Design is essential in modern day life. It has the power to evoke emotion or suppress it. It can mean the difference of getting lost or being found. It can be playful or serious. But ultimately it is about ideas that communicate. Although Joel’s discipline is graphic design he has a strong interest in all things creative, therefore his belief is learn to be creative and then apply it to any artistic medium to convey a message.
Joel’s earlier work has been some what minimalist in style but he has been exploring more experimental ideas and is becoming interested in blurring boundaries between illustration, graphic design and fine art.
Joel also has strong interests in film, music and photography. He has worked on a series of film sets which have been highly demanding; his job details have varied from production to production, from making cups of tea to assisting a camera operator, to improvising clapper boards. At the begining of the 3rd year Joel obtained work placement at EMI records where he work on art work for musicians such as Lilly Allen, Alfa Beat, Jullian Vellard and Alessi’s Ark.
At present he and fellow peers are in very early stages of setting up a creative collective under the name of ASLAN INSTITUTE, which is located in south east London. ASLAN INST. will follow similar beliefs to Joel, working in a range of creative disciplines Working autonomously, the idea is to create a sound/light/environment and experience – and act as a relaxed structure to host monthly variations on this.
Creative control of the event is collective amongst the group and everything produced is made as ASLAN Inst. With no elements of control, people are free to do whatever they want.
