Thomas Hendrey

The Primary concern of Thomas Hendrey’s current practice can best be as described as formal representations of natural structures. Working with a range of materials that includes glass, dead animals, plants and fruit the artist stages his own reconstruction of these forms to create new sometimes, ‘fictional’ objects that enter into a dialogue about the role of science and its impact on our relationship with the world around us.

Often taking long periods of time to complete Thomas’s constructed glass drawings seek to represent the surfaces of the earth subjected to extreme heats and pressures. By breaking the compound down into smaller pieces the glasses own weaknesses can be exploited, drawing lines and forming shapes that are unique to the way the material is made. These works can be seen as three dimensional sculptures, that interact with light and occupy real space, but also (when viewed from directly head on) as do dimensional line drawings. The arrangement of pieces from small to large creates a sense of time and perspective within the work.
