Julia Kubik
“The singing lark” is a representation of smoke through the use of ceramic pipe remnants found on the Thames foreshore. The smoke produced by our ever-increasing industrialisation, our economy figuratively going up in smoke, and the constant destruction in Iraq and Afghanistan should remind us of the impact of our choices and actions.
Therein lies one of our most human aspects and ultimately one of our greatest failings – a natural tendency towards self-destruction and our inherent ability to justify it to ourselves. Whether that self-destruction be through the use of tobacco, the continual drive to use our natural resources or our never-ending drive towards war in the name of justice.
