Georgia Hudson

“My current work is concerned with capturing the essentials of form. In the 16mm film ‘Shapes Against a Low Sky’ (2009) I show a painterly interpretation of the moving image that communicates the experience of wandering through space and time. This journey has no fixed destination but instead follows a series of continuously developing trajectories. The film acts as a vertical incursion of its surroundings, illuminating the essence of the moment in a cine-poetic gesture.

The films backdrop of deep Prussian blue brush strokes, hand painted directly onto the negative, imbues it with a sense of ‘otherness’. The ceramic shapes breathe an animalistic air, metamorphosing in the mind of the viewer, summoning nostalgic recognitions, igniting the viewers creativity and leaving space for the association of their own set of personal symbols surrounding these essentially reductive forms. These are simple offerings made to the viewer and are inspired by my fascination with the fundamentals of the human condition.”

Georgia Hudson has worked extensively with clay and ceramics and previous works have included a performance for film piece, ‘perf face’ (2007) where the artist is shown moulding with only her mouth a block of clay that hangs in front of her face from a meat hook. The film has a sensual quality while also touching upon the darker aspects of the relationship between desire and creativity. She has also exhibited with the ceramic collective BUFF for the exhibition ‘Make or Break’ in 2008. Other multidisciplinary works include a collaboration with artist Naomi Pratt to create the sound, light and sculpture installation ‘Kaleidoscope’ at the Sassoon gallery London in 2008.
