BUFF Presents "Make or Break"
16 May 08
Whilst in the second year, our group of fifteen students formed the collective ‘BUFF. We hosted a one-off evening event called ‘Make or Break’ at the Village Underground in Shoreditch.
‘Make or Break’ showcased our experimentations in collaborative work in an unconventional gallery manner. Our aim was to question the notion of authorship and fabrication, challenging the preconceptions of ceramic art. These ideas were presented in an exciting evening of installations, sculpture, interactive art and performance to an audience of industry professionals, artists and designers, press and creative peers, as well as art students.
From the onset, the idea of collaboration was a key point for us, and one that distinguished us from previous artists who have come from the Ceramics department at Camberwell. We felt we could intervene this space and invite an audience to come see our collaborative approach to ideas and practice. ‘Make or Break’ was an opportunity for us to exhibit work and ideas that we all developed and produced together. As a year group, we shared similar ideas in our approach to Ceramics that acted as a common denominator for all of us. This inspired us to form the group and show new ways of approaching work– from developing the concepts, through to production and the exhibiting of the work as a single entity.
We wanted to show the audience our unique way of approaching innovative concepts and production values within our work – and Village Underground was the most appropriate ‘alternative’ venue. We felt we needed a ‘raw’ space that could showcase our ideas and allow the audience to interact with our works.
